Careers & Enterprise


From September 2018 UK schools have been required by law to publish details of their careers programmes, as well as having a named “careers leader” in place to oversee it all. Here at IAG we have been ahead of the curve appointing a careers lead (Mr S Boot) in the July of 2018 and developing our Careers & Enterprise programmes as an intrinsic aspect of both our Global Citizenship Curriculum and our Professional Pathways programme; in particular our approach to Internships.

It is expected that by the end of 2020 we will have in the place the sustainable ability to offer every pupil at least seven “meaningful encounters” with employers over the course of their school career. In order to shape our approach to Careers & Enterprise and to judge our effectiveness, we have adopted the world-renowned Gatsby 8 benchmarks.

Below we outline our approach, strategy and provide access to a more detailed overview through our Careers Vision & Strategy 2018-2029 strategic document.

Gatsby, and IAG, believes that every young person needs high-quality career guidance to make an informed decision about their future – this is even more important with reforms to technical education on the horizon in 2020. Career guidance is also a vehicle for social justice; young people without social capital or career support at home suffer most from poor career guidance.  

IAG’s approach ensures that students are both exam ready and world ready, becoming globally minded citizens and ‘future-ready’ learners.

Our approach to KS4 seeks to make the experience more personalised and authentic, rather than being purely driven by terminal examinations. IAG is dedicated to delivering a targeted and universal careers support programme through events such as: productions, workshops, assemblies, trips, our Professional Pathways Programme and our Internship Programme, ‘The Real World Learning Project’, which will be available for all Year 10 students from January 2020.

Our Professional Pathways model, which covers eight industry recognised and ‘future-ready’ pathways, draws together complementary and facilitating subjects while avoiding the narrow channeling of an individual into a single ‘career path’. These Pathways include:

  • Research and Development

  • Business and Finance  

  • Communication and Media

  • Healthcare

  • Health, Fitness and Coaching

  • The Creative Arts

  • Information Technology

  • STEM

Our strategy aims are...

  1. To thoroughly embed Careers across all curriculum areas in innovative ways.

  2. To ensure Careers is explicit for our students and that they can self identify their personalised careers journey.

  3. To ensure that the IAG (IB) curriculum and careers strategy is future proof in preparation for future year groups and our new building.

  4. To enable parents and staff to feel empowered and confident in their roles as educators and careers champions.

  5. To provide tailored careers support to key groups, for example, Disadvantaged and Most Able, in order to ensure they all achieve their full potential.
